How to Watch NBA Games Without Cable: Free and Paid Options
You can watch NBA games without a cable package using free local broadcasts, official streaming subscriptions, or NBA League Pass. In the U.S., an antenna can receive selected live games on local ABC or NBC stations at no monthly cost. The NBA also offers free classic-game replays with an NBA ID. Neither option includes every current live game, so check the official schedule first.
Free options: antenna broadcasts and classic games
For free live basketball in the U.S., check ABC and NBC. When a game airs on a local affiliate you can receive, connect an antenna to your TV, scan for channels, and tune in. Reception depends on your location, building, and antenna placement; an antenna does not unlock ESPN, Peacock, or Prime Video exclusives. The FCC’s antenna guide explains reception and channel scanning. Outside the U.S., check the official local broadcaster, since free coverage varies by country.
An antenna can receive local broadcast games.
For 2026–27, the NBA’s national partners are ABC/ESPN, NBC/Peacock, and Prime Video. Some games air on broadcast ABC or NBC; others stream through a paid service. Check the NBA viewing guide for the current season’s platform details.
For free on-demand viewing, NBA Help says an NBA ID provides access to hundreds of full classic games and original programs, including selected games for every team and NBA Finals series since 1990. These are archive titles, not a free stream of tonight’s game. In the NBA App, sign in, open Discover, choose Live, then browse Featured. On NBA.com, sign in and choose Watch > Featured.
Selected classic games are free with NBA ID.
Paid ways to stream without cable
NBA League Pass for out-of-market games
League Pass is the NBA’s direct subscription for live out-of-market games, available through NBA.com and the NBA App. It is useful for following teams outside your area, but it does not guarantee every game live. In the U.S., local-team and nationally televised games are blacked out live. In Canada, nationally televised games are blacked out. The NBA says restrictions protect broadcasters’ exclusive rights. In the U.S., local blackouts become available on replay three days after broadcast; nationally televised games become available at 6 a.m. ET the next day. Check your ZIP code and the official blackout guide before subscribing.
League Pass on a supported device; blackouts apply.
The NBA Help Center currently says every game is available live on League Pass outside the U.S. and Canada. Availability, plans, and terms can differ by country; check the rules for your actual location, especially when traveling. The NBA purchase page lists current plans and supported devices. Confirm the price and billing terms at checkout.
National and local streaming services
For a nationally televised game, use the broadcaster listed for that matchup. ABC/ESPN games, NBC/Peacock games, and Prime Video games do not all share one streaming subscription. A live-TV streaming package may carry some broadcast or cable channels, but its lineup depends on provider and ZIP code and may exclude streaming-only games. If you follow one team, check its official “Where to Watch” page for the local channel or service; local rights vary.
Find the right stream for a game
Check the matchup. Use the official NBA schedule and select the game to see its broadcaster. NBA’s Tap to Watch links can also direct you to participating live telecasts.
Match the station to your setup. For ABC or NBC, see whether your local affiliate carries the game and whether an antenna receives it. For ESPN, Peacock, Prime Video, or a regional network, confirm the subscription and local availability.
Open the authorized service. Sign in to the broadcaster’s app or website, or use NBA.com/the NBA App for League Pass. If a game is blacked out, follow the broadcaster named in the blackout guide; League Pass alone will not show it live.
Check the broadcaster before subscribing.
Are Kodi add-ons a free NBA shortcut?
Kodi is a media-center app, not an NBA subscription. The old draft’s Project Cypher and Cerebro IPTV instructions point to third-party repositories, not an official NBA or ESPN viewing method. A plugin claiming to show paid sports channels for free does not prove that it is authorized, and the stream may disappear or come with unsafe downloads. Kodi’s official description says users provide their own content or configure third-party services. Use only services or add-ons authorized to carry the game.
A VPN can encrypt your connection, but it does not provide broadcast rights or a subscription. Do not rely on changing your apparent location to defeat a blackout: the NBA ties blackouts to local and national broadcast rights, and service terms may limit location masking. Choose a service available in your actual location.
Choose the option that fits
Free live games: check local ABC or NBC broadcasts receivable with an antenna.
Free full games on demand: sign in with an NBA ID and browse classic games.
Out-of-market live games: compare League Pass plans and check blackouts first.
One specific national game: use the broadcaster listed on the NBA schedule.
No single no-cable plan carries every NBA game live in every market. Start with the schedule, confirm who has the rights, then choose a free broadcast, classic replay, or paid stream.
