DirectX 11 vs. DirectX 12: Which Is Better for Gaming?
Learn how DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 differ in CPU overhead, compatibility, and gaming performance, plus a fair way to test both in a game.
An underground farm in Minecraft can grow ordinary crops without access to the sky. Give plants farmland, nearby water, enough light, and time in a loaded area, and you can harvest wheat, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot below ground. The key correction to the old advice is that farmland does not instantly fail when it looks dry: water hydrates it and helps crops grow, while light is still needed in an enclosed room. Minecraft's official farmland guide covers tilling, irrigation, torches, and protecting soil.

In Survival, wheat seeds can come from tall grass; village plots and chests can also help you get started. Most common seeds follow the same basic pattern: hoe dirt, water the farmland, provide light, plant, then wait for the crop to mature. Minecraft's seed guide also notes that bone meal can speed up growth.
Pick a spot near your base so the room is convenient and likely to stay within the active area while you play. Dig a space large enough for beds and a path, then close the ceiling and entrance if you want a fully enclosed farm. Leave headroom above the crops so you can move and harvest comfortably. The room does not need to be at a particular depth; it only needs a floor you can till and a light plan.
Use your hoe on dirt or grass to make farmland. A simple starter layout is a 9-by-9 plot with a water source in the center, or a narrow water channel running between two beds. Keep every farmland block within four blocks of water. Properly hydrated soil appears darker than dry farmland; if water is too far away, add another source or shorten the beds. The official farmland instructions explain the four-block watering distance.

Plant wheat seeds, carrots, potatoes, or beetroot seeds on the tilled blocks. In a dark underground room, place torches or other light sources around the beds and check that the corners are not left unlit. Ordinary crops need light but not direct sunlight, so a sealed room can work. If plants stop growing, add light near the crop blocks and confirm the area is loaded while you play. The official overview of seeds and crops describes the same soil, water, and light basics.

Build a stone, slab, or other solid path beside the beds so you do not need to jump across tilled soil. Jumping or falling onto farmland can turn it back into dirt and break the crop, so keep your normal route off the planting blocks. When a crop is mature, harvest it with your platform's usual break or interact control and replant the seeds or crop items you want to keep growing. A hoe prepares farmland; it is not required to harvest ordinary crops. For a larger farm, separate each crop type into its own bed so harvesting and replanting stay organized.

Sugar cane, cactus, and mushrooms do not use this same tilled-soil setup. They have different planting blocks or growing conditions, so make a separate farm for them instead of placing them in the wheat-and-vegetable beds.
With water, light, and a protected path in place, an underground farm is a reliable way to keep food and useful crops close to your base without giving up surface space.
