How to Change a Chrome Profile Name on Desktop

To change a Chrome profile name on a computer, open the profile menu, choose Manage Chrome profiles, and edit the profile card you want to rename. Enter the new label and Chrome saves it automatically; you do not need to restart the browser. You can also edit the profile that is already open through Profile > Customize profile > Edit. Google’s current Chrome profile instructions include both routes.

Rename a Chrome profile from the profile manager

Use this route when you want to rename a different profile or prefer to see all of your profiles before choosing one. Chrome keeps each profile’s browsing information separate, so check the profile name and picture before editing.

  1. Open the profile menu. Start Chrome and select the profile icon near the top-right corner of the window.

Open the Chrome profile menu and select Manage Chrome profiles.
  1. Open the profile manager. Under Other Chrome profiles, select Manage Chrome profiles. Chrome displays the profiles available on this browser.

Select Edit from the More menu on the profile card you want to rename.
  1. Choose the profile to edit. Find its card, select the three-dot More menu in the card’s upper-right corner, and choose Edit. Check the card name before choosing an option; the adjacent menu can also contain a delete command.

In the Edit profile dialog, change the name field; the same screen also offers profile photo and color choices.
  1. Enter the new name. Select the name field, replace the old label, and close the editor. Chrome saves the change automatically. Open the profile menu again to confirm the new label appears.

The illustrations show a profile called “Personal” being renamed to “Travel.” Use any short label that will help you recognize the right Chrome window, such as “Work,” “School,” or “Family.” The name is only a label for organizing profiles; it does not change the websites or account data stored in them.

Rename the profile you are using now

If the profile you want is already open, you can use Chrome’s shorter route: select the profile icon, choose Customize profile, and select Edit. Change the name in the editor and close it. This shortcut edits the current profile; use Manage Chrome profiles when you need to select a different profile first.

Chrome’s wording can shift slightly between releases or operating systems. If you do not see the shortcut, use the profile manager route above. The important control is the profile card’s More > Edit option, not the Google Account menu.

What the Chrome profile name changes

A Chrome profile keeps its own bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings. Renaming the profile changes its identifying label in Chrome. It does not merge profiles, remove their stored information, or change the Google Account name attached to a signed-in profile. Google notes that when you first sign in to a new Chrome profile, its name may start as your Google Account name; you can still edit the Chrome profile label afterward.

  • Want to rename only the browser profile? Use Chrome’s profile editor described above.
  • Want to change the name other people see in Google services? Edit your account name in Google Account settings. Google maintains a separate guide to changing your Google Account name and picture.
  • Want to switch between work and personal browsing? Rename each profile with a recognizable label, then select the matching profile from Chrome’s profile menu. Each profile retains its own browsing data.

Change a profile photo or color

The profile editor can also change the photo and color theme associated with a Chrome profile. Those settings help distinguish profile windows at a glance, but they are optional and are not required to rename a profile. If you want to change the picture used across Google services, update the Google Account picture separately. Google says account photo changes can take a few days to appear throughout its products, so a delay there does not mean the Chrome profile rename failed.

You do not need to turn Chrome Sync off and back on to change the profile label. The rename is made in the Chrome profile editor and saves automatically.

If the new name does not appear

  • Check that you edited the right card. If you have several Chrome windows open, each may be using a different profile. Open the profile menu in the window you want to identify and compare its current name with the card you edited.
  • Reopen the profile menu. Close the menu and open it again to refresh what Chrome displays. If the name still looks unchanged, return to Manage Chrome profiles, select the intended card, and confirm the name field contains the new label.
  • Separate browser and account names. An account name shown on a Google webpage is not necessarily the Chrome profile label. Changing one does not automatically rename the other.
  • Use Chrome’s controls rather than renaming profile files. The in-browser editor is the supported way to change the visible name. You do not need to move, delete, or recreate the profile to rename it.

Once the new label appears in the profile menu or manager, the change is complete. Your profile remains the same profile, with its existing bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings.
