How to Search Text Inside Documents on Windows 10

Windows 10 can search for words and phrases inside supported documents, not just by file name. The most reliable built-in method is to search from File Explorer after making sure Windows Search is indexing both the folder and the contents of the file type you need.

Note: Microsoft ended free support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. These search and indexing features still work on Windows 10 PCs, but the operating system no longer receives normal free security updates or technical support. See Microsoft's Windows file search guidance for current support information.

Search text inside documents with File Explorer

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Go to the folder, library, or drive that should contain the document. Starting in a specific folder keeps the search focused.
  3. Click the search box in the upper-right corner.
  4. Type a distinctive word from the document. For an exact phrase, put it in quotation marks, such as "quarterly forecast".
  5. Press Enter and review the matching files. Windows Search can match indexed text as well as file properties.

Search from the folder where the files are stored, then enter a distinctive word or exact phrase.

Microsoft documents that Windows Search can return a document by a keyword from its contents, and File Explorer uses the Windows search index to speed up those results. Advanced Query Syntax also supports quoted phrases and other filters when you need to narrow a search.

Make sure Windows is indexing the right folders

If a known document never appears, first check the search scope. In Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Search > Searching Windows. Under Find My Files, you can use Classic for the standard indexed locations or Enhanced to index a much broader set of files on the PC. Microsoft notes that broader indexing can use more system resources.

Add a specific folder through Indexing Options

For more precise control, open Start, search for Indexing Options, and open it. Select Modify, then make sure the folder containing your documents is included. This is especially useful when you keep work files outside Documents, Desktop, Music, or Pictures.

Use Indexing Options to verify that the folder you want to search is part of the index.

After adding a large folder, give Windows time to process it. Microsoft says the initial indexing pass can take up to a couple of hours, while later updates normally happen in the background. More details are available in Microsoft's search indexing documentation.

Enable content indexing for the file type

A folder can be indexed while a particular extension is still searchable only by properties. To check this:

  1. Open Indexing Options.
  2. Select Advanced. Administrator approval may be required.
  3. Open the File Types tab.
  4. Select the extension you care about, such as txt, log, or a supported document format.
  5. Choose Index Properties and File Contents, then select OK.

For searchable document text, the file type must be configured to index its contents, not properties only.

Why some files still cannot be searched by text

Windows Search relies on filter handlers (IFilters) to extract text from different file formats. Windows includes handlers for many common formats, and installed applications can add more. If a format has no suitable filter, content search may not work even when the folder itself is indexed. Microsoft explains this filter system in its Windows Search filter documentation.

  • Plain-text files: formats such as TXT and LOG are straightforward for Windows Search to read.
  • Office and other structured documents: support can depend on the filters installed on that PC, so check the Filter Description shown on the File Types tab instead of relying on a fixed extension list.
  • PDF files: the PDF must contain searchable text and the system needs an appropriate PDF filter. A scanned page that is only an image will not become searchable until it has been OCR-processed.
  • Protected content: Microsoft notes that Windows Search does not index the contents of some DRM- or IRM-protected files.

Use PowerShell for TXT, LOG, scripts, and other text files

For folders full of logs, scripts, or source files, PowerShell can search the actual files directly instead of relying on the Windows index. The Select-String cmdlet is designed to find text in strings and files. For example:

Get-ChildItem "C:\Work" -Recurse -File -Include *.txt,*.log,*.ps1 | ForEach-Object { Select-String -LiteralPath $_.FullName -Pattern "quarterly forecast" -SimpleMatch }

Change C:\Work, the extensions, and the phrase to match your files. This approach is best for text-based formats; it is not a replacement for a document-format filter that can interpret Word, Excel, or PDF internals. See the official Select-String documentation.

If File Explorer returns no results

  • Confirm you are searching the correct folder or that the folder is included in the index.
  • Verify the extension is set to Index Properties and File Contents.
  • Wait for indexing to finish after changing locations or file-type settings.
  • Open one of the files and make sure the phrase exists as selectable text rather than text embedded in an image.
  • Try one distinctive word before using a long exact phrase.

For most Windows 10 users, File Explorer plus properly configured indexing is enough to search text inside documents without installing a separate search utility.
