How to Install Apple Mobile Device Support Without iTunes on Windows 10

You do not need to install iTunes just to get iPhone or iPad support on Windows 10. Apple’s current approach is to install the Apple Devices app from the Microsoft Store. That app provides the software Windows needs to recognize and manage an iPhone or iPad, and it replaces the old advice to extract Apple Mobile Device Support from an iTunes installer.

Apple does not currently publish Apple Mobile Device Support as a separate, standalone download for modern Windows 10 setups. If your goal is simply to connect an iPhone, back it up, update it, restore it, or sync supported content, use Apple Devices instead. Apple documents the app in its Apple Devices User Guide.

Install Apple Mobile Device Support without iTunes

  1. Open Microsoft Store and search for Apple Devices. Use the Store app built into Windows 10 and search for “Apple Devices.” Make sure you choose the listing published by Apple Inc.

  1. Select Apple Devices, then install and open it. The app is Apple’s current Windows tool for managing an iPhone or iPad. Apple says it can be used to update, back up, restore, manage, and sync supported devices. You can also review Apple’s current Windows app lineup on its Windows apps support page.

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad with a data-capable USB cable. Open Apple Devices first, then connect the device directly to the PC. The cable must support data as well as charging. Keep the iPhone or iPad unlocked while Windows detects it.

  1. Approve the Trust This Computer prompt and confirm the device appears. If the iPhone or iPad asks whether to trust the computer, tap Trust and enter the device passcode if requested. When the connection is working, the device should appear in the Apple Devices sidebar. Apple’s current recognition checklist is available in If your computer doesn’t recognize your iPhone or iPad.

How to confirm the Apple device support is working

With the current Apple Devices workflow, the most useful check is not whether an old Apple Mobile Device Support entry appears under Apps & features. Instead, connect the device and confirm that it appears inside Apple Devices. If it does, Windows and Apple’s device software are communicating correctly.

You may also see the iPhone or iPad in Windows Device Manager or in Windows features that can access photos. The exact device name and category can vary, so avoid treating one particular Device Manager label as the only valid result.

If Apple Devices does not detect your iPhone or iPad

  • Update Apple Devices. Apple recommends using Microsoft Store to obtain and update its current Windows apps. See Apple’s Windows software update guidance.
  • Try another cable and USB port. Apple specifically recommends a cable that supports both data and charging. Avoid charge-only cables and, when possible, connect directly to the PC rather than through a problematic hub.
  • Unlock the device and check the trust prompt. If you previously tapped Don’t Trust, follow Apple’s recognition guidance to reset the trust decision, then reconnect.
  • Install available Windows updates. Driver fixes can arrive through Windows Update. Restart Windows after important updates before testing the connection again.
  • Check Device Manager. If the connected iPhone or iPad has a warning icon, use Windows’ supported driver update or reinstall options. Microsoft documents these steps in Update drivers through Device Manager in Windows.
  • Restart both devices. A restart can clear a stuck USB or device-service state after an app or driver update.

What about the old iTunes MSI extraction method?

Older guides often recommended downloading an iTunes executable, opening it with 7-Zip, and extracting files such as AppleApplicationSupport.msi and AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi. That method reflected an older Windows/iTunes packaging model. Apple’s current Windows 10 guidance points users to Microsoft Store and the dedicated Apple Devices app instead.

For that reason, do not download an Apple Mobile Device Support MSI from a third-party driver or file-hosting site. You could end up with an outdated, modified, or incompatible package. If you maintain specialized legacy software that explicitly requires an old Apple MSI, use a package supplied through your organization or the software vendor’s supported deployment process.

Do you need Apple Music or Apple TV too?

Not for basic iPhone or iPad device management. Apple Devices is the relevant app for backups, updates, restores, and manual device management. Apple Music and Apple TV are needed when you want to use their respective media libraries with Apple Devices. Apple still documents iTunes on Windows for podcasts and audiobooks, but installing iTunes is not required simply to make an iPhone or iPad connect through Apple Devices.
